Now you can buy these very reasonably from humongous factories
in Quebec for about what I pay for a bed's worth of wood.
They are all very well, but not the same.
This queen bed is shown with original or high footboard.
I also make them with mattress height footboards (see Mission
Slat
), or a low foot rail (see Steeple
). I customise
the height to mattress height and preference. Comes with cross
slats and a central support foot for mattress warranty.

This bed has walnut legs and curly cherry cross rails. Don't
ask where I found 12/4 walnut in this day and age. We went
with a "steeple" headboard to echo the pointed ceiling.
I like making beds, because people get very attached to them,
and this bedroom suite is particularly fondly remembered.

I resawed these slats from the same 10/4 board
I made the legs out of, and tailored the height to the mattress.
All my side rails are attached with German precision mortised
hardware, that tightens as you put weight on it. |

The steeple is just a design addition to remove
the cap from a mission style bed. The spacing between these
slats actually gets 1/64th of an inch wider on each slat from
the centre out. It's hard to pick out without knowing, but it
produces a quiet little motion to the slats. I like to try and
keep vitality in my designs, even if they start from a very
linear, mission place. |

I developed the "New Shaker" line with it's slim
tapered legs in part too accompany the pencil post. The top
"testers" are available if needed.
I have made many pencils of different heights over the years,
from 3' foot and 5' head right up to the 90" shown. They
are somewhat higher off the ground than other beds, I like
the clean simplicity of them. I do an octagonal taper, and
have several headboard styles.
