Custom Case Goods

This piece began life as a sketch by my client, who designs
the dashboard wood graining for a major car manufacturer.
The doors are full width slabs of a tree with the bark still
on, cut up the centre along the line of the grain. I actually
drove the raw piece of wood to the client's house to get a
feel for how it would work in their room.
There are no supports or constraints on the doors.

The line across the top of these doors started out as a playful
"we could do anything" line on a sketch, but took
me hours to lay out in real-time, climbing up and down a ladder
for perspective, to transfer the free motion of a pencil to
solid wood.
The curved doors have Arbutus burl veneer and curly cherry
frames. We wanted a watery look as the bedroom overlooks a
river. The legs are Macassar Ebony solids and veneers.
In closeup you may be able to pick out the hand carved chip
finish on the compound curve crown, and the knife hinges.
Allow at least two weeks for delivery.

Sometimes I copy things right out of the book!
This matched pair are antiques "while you wait" ,
my personal touches are the one piece bookmatched cherry door
panels, the fiery curly cherry rails. |

This buffet and hutch exhibit cherry and walnut milled from a local farmer's well managed woodlot. The shelves and bottom of the hutch are glass to let the interior lighting fall onto the buffet top. We chose a subtle stained glass pattern to allow the owner's dishes to take center stage.

I used beech for this armoire, I love just about all woods
and I'm not fussy or snooty about exploring different possibilities.
The sides are veneer core plywood with 2" solid edging,
so I could make a plywood unit with an interesting corner,
not boring old square. The customers were looking for accents
like the streaks in the door panels, which I spotted climbing
around my favourite huge industrial lumberyard, dodging forklifts
and pestering the staff.

On this "two tone" piece, the cherry through tenons
poke through the walnut sides for contrast, while the top
door line is a "Ben" and carries across the entire
unit, not just each door.
Handmade glass adds a little shimmer and covers a little
more of the stereo gear than regular glass would. Makes a
nice view from the leather Morris chair in "chairs".

Nothing "new" about this shaker sideboard, except
the handmade pulls lifted from a design magazine and converted
from brass to wood.
Complements some authentic reproduction Shaker style beds
I made (not shown). Made to fit the space.

Gosh I wish I had a better picture of this! I would settle
for the same lovely blue in my dining room too.
I just couldn't find a suitable metal pull, so I made these
out of the same wood as the drawer fronts: they took me two
hours over lunch to lay out, not just plunk plunk plunk in
a line; each row a slightly different size.
The legs and sides are Imbuye, the darker streaks in the
maple are clouds on a bird's eye sky.

Walnut and Cherry
Armoire |
 |
Features |
I often use two different woods in a piece, for
a "two tone" effect. Often I'll have the darker walnut
as a supporting frame, for the cherry "picture". We
lucked out with this very curly cherry, I found enough to cover
two identical units. |
