My classic table. I got lucky at the lumberyard on this one,
I found a sequence of boards all from one tree in a stack
and scarfed them all.
The table has gently tapered legs, opens to 99" with
two 18" leaves. It seats 6 comfortably closed and 10
open. Mortise and tenon joints on the legs will last and last.
As with all my tops, the underside receives the same finish
as the top to protect it from warping. Top boards are triple
milled as well.
Tables are available with round ends, or fixed, in all sizes.
Please order at least 12 weeks before Thanksgiving

This is a sweet little table. This top is extremely
curly cherry, as usual glued up from one long board. Compliments
the Morris Chair very nicely. |

Shown with slats, but available with
spindles or open space. I added a mid shelf on this one. I customise
the height to just under mattress height to avoid whacking into
it. Dovetail drawers run on waxed wooden slides. Even my night
tables have adjustable feet to cope with rugs and sloping walls. |

Sounds Arthurian. I designed this as a counterpoint to fit
the alcove. It has four legs, but I have made several of these,
one with five legs. Why not? How many tables have five legs?
Have you ever thought of this before? I guess I spend a lot
of time by myself in a shop with four legged tables.
Anyways, occasionally I phone the lumberyard, I just ask
and see what they send, and am sometimes rewarded, as in this
case with an 18" wide 2" thick curly maple slab.
I went with curly maple to echo the water just outside the
windows.

This was one of my more difficult design projects, a modification
of Frank Lloyd Wright's table in the "Husser" house,
in Chicago. The trouble is, Frank was a brilliant designer,
and squeezing his design into a regular sized house is not
easy.
When something is perfect into itself, how do you change
it? I'm happy with the result though, the checkerboard inlay
was made out of the edge of the top, so it looks carved in.

I saved the book matched gunstock quality curly
walnut in the top of this stand for two years waiting to find
a home for it. I usually steer for subtlety, so I put the carved
letters on the back. |

I probably don't do a lot of glass topped tables, but we
wanted the rug to show through, and keep the room light. I
like playing with the quasi Japanese style of overlapping
corners, lots of little joints in this table.
Ash has a very straight grain that lends itself to linear
lines. We weren't perfectly happy with the finished height
so I sawed it down 5/8"on site with a Japanese dozuki
saw.

Woodworking is risky business, as wood is a living
thing that keeps moving for many years. This two piece top of
air dried walnut has been good to us, staying dead flat even
with only 18 months drying time and a non petrochemical oil
finish. We were prepared for it to go wrangy and need to be
flattened after a year, because we loved the wood and we wanted
it Now. I made up the base to echo a tree trunk's shape. |

This top for a metal base I resawed out of a monster
3" thick board, and laid out in strips on edge, to avoid
warping and to play with the straight grain. |

On this table top, the veneer pieces are laid out
in long, single boards the length of the table, to remind one of
a solid harvest style top. I liked this veneer so much I bought
the whole tree (4,000 sq. ft.) The border is solid cherry. The legs
taper from square to an octagon, capped with a solid steel black
forged ball foot. Shown with Parson's
chairs. |

I made this for my buddy in Chicago who sends me challenging
ideas. "Can you do this? Will it fall apart? How on earth.."
(She also has the five legged table
).
Stained with a five layer deep purple on mahogany, the base
is from an early 1900's American design, the top has dovetails
on the corners.
